Perfect Creamy Tuscan Chicken Gnocchi

Creamy Tuscan Chicken Gnocchi, infused with mushrooms and garlic, offers a rich and savory experience, where earthy notes meet aromatic warmth. Succulent pieces of chicken are nestled among soft, pillowy gnocchi, absorbing the flavors of fresh spinach and basil, creating a harmonious blend of taste and texture.

Cherry tomatoes burst with sweetness and add a subtle acidity, perfectly complementing the velvety half and half-based sauce. A generous sprinkling of Parmesan cheese on top adds a final touch of umami, elevating this dish to a luxurious culinary delight.

How to Make Gnocchi Vegetable Skillet

First assemble the following ingredients:

  • Butter (3 tablespoons) – Adds a rich, creamy base that enhances the overall depth and silkiness of the sauce.
  • Chicken breast (1/2 lb, diced) – Offers a tender, mildly savory taste that absorbs and melds with the surrounding flavors.
  • Garlic (1/4 cup) – Several cloves of garlic provide a pungent, aromatic warmth, integral to the Tuscan-inspired flavor profile.
  • Shiitake mushrooms (2 cups) – Contribute an earthy, umami flavor that complements the more robust components of the dish.
  • Gnocchi (1 lb) – Brings a soft, pillowy texture with a subtle, doughy taste that acts as a canvas for the sauce.
  • Baby spinach (2 cups) – Introduces a slightly bitter, leafy flavor that adds freshness and a touch of color to the dish.
  • Fresh Basil (1/4 cup) – Imparts a sweet, peppery aroma that elevates the dish with a hint of freshness.
  • Cherry tomatoes (1 cup) – Burst with a juicy, sweet-tart flavor, providing a bright contrast to the creaminess.
  • Celtic sea salt (1 teaspoons) – Enhances the overall flavor profile with its nuanced, briny depth.
  • Pepper (1 teaspoons) – Adds a slight kick and a hint of spice, balancing the dish’s richness.
  • Half and half (1 cup) – Creates a luxuriously creamy and smooth texture, with a subtle, comforting richness.
  • Parmesan (1/2 cup) – Provides a salty, nutty finish that complements and elevates the creamy texture and flavors.

Follow these Instructions to make this on pot wonder:

Heat Pan. In a large nonstick pan, melt butter until foamy. Add chicken to pan, and cook, stirring occasionally to prevent burning, until golden brown.

Add Vegetables. Add tomatoes, garlic and mushrooms, simmer until garlic is fragrant and soft and mushrooms have started to brown, about 3 minutes.

Add Gnocchi. Pour in water and gnocchi. Let gnocchi soak up water and reduce, about 4 minutes on high. Reduce heat to medium and add spinach, basil, salt and pepper and stir well. Let spinach cook down, another 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning or sticking.

Add dairy. Turn heat off and add in cream, stirring vigorously as you add. Return to medium heat and stir in parmesan cheese. When parmesan is melted and cream sauce is thick, remove from heat and serve immediately.

Tips and Tricks to Perfect Creamy Tuscan Chicken Potato Gnocchi

Quality Ingredients: Use fresh, high-quality ingredients, especially for key elements like chicken, Parmesan, and fresh herbs. This makes a significant difference in flavor.

Properly Cook Chicken: Brown the chicken pieces first to develop a deep flavor. Ensure they’re cooked through, but avoid overcooking to keep them tender.

Sauté Mushrooms Well: Cook the mushrooms until they’re golden brown to bring out their natural umami flavors.

Use Fresh Garlic: Fresh garlic provides a more potent and aromatic flavor than powdered or pre-minced varieties.

Pre-Cook Gnocchi: If using store-bought gnocchi, boil it until it floats to the top, then drain. This prevents it from becoming too mushy when added to the sauce.

Deglaze the Pan: After cooking the chicken and mushrooms, use a bit of dry white wine or chicken broth to deglaze the pan and scrape up any flavorful bits.

Balance Creaminess: Use half and half for a creamy texture, but be careful not to let it boil vigorously, as this can cause the sauce to separate.

Season Properly: Season your dish with salt and pepper at different stages to layer the flavors. Don’t forget a pinch of nutmeg if you like an extra depth.

Garnish for Freshness: Garnish with fresh basil and extra Parmesan cheese right before serving to add a fresh and savory touch.

FAQS

What if I don’t have half and half?

You can substitute half and half with a mix of whole milk and heavy cream (equal parts), or just use heavy cream for a richer sauce.

Can I use a different type of protein instead of chicken?

Absolutely! While chicken is traditional, you can easily substitute it with salmon, shrimp, sausage, or keep it vegetarian by adding extra mushrooms and other vegetables. You can also substitute skinless chicken thighs for chicken breasts.

Can I make this dish gluten-free?

Yes, use gluten-free gnocchi and ensure all other ingredients are gluten-free. Always check labels if you’re cooking for someone with a gluten intolerance.

How do I store and reheat leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove, adding a little milk or broth if the sauce has thickened.

Can I freeze this dish?

It’s possible, but the cream-based sauce may separate or become grainy upon thawing. If you do freeze it, thaw in the refrigerator and reheat slowly while stirring.

Can I add more vegetables to this dish?

Definitely! Feel free to add vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes, or artichokes for additional flavor and nutrition.

What to Enjoy with Gnocchi Skillet

Crisp Green Salad: Opt for a simple salad with a light dressing. The freshness and acidity of the salad will balance the creaminess of the gnocchi.

Garlic Bread or Focaccia: These bread options are great for soaking up the creamy sauce, and their garlic and herb flavors harmonize with the Tuscan elements of the dish.

Steamed or Grilled Vegetables: Consider vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, or zucchini. Their slight bitterness and crunch offer a nice contrast to the soft gnocchi and rich sauce.

Sautéed Spinach or Kale: These greens, lightly sautéed with garlic, add a nutritious and flavorful side that complements the spinach often found in the gnocchi dish itself.

Roasted Cherry Tomatoes: Their sweetness and slight acidity can cut through the richness of the creamy sauce, adding a delightful burst of flavor.

A Light White Wine: Choose a crisp and refreshing white wine, like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, to cleanse the palate and enhance the creamy, savory flavors of the dish.

Lemon Wedges for Garnish: A squeeze of lemon adds a touch of acidity, enhancing the flavors and balancing the creaminess of the gnocchi.

Parmesan Shavings: Extra Parmesan cheese on the side allows guests to add a salty, umami-rich accent to their dish.
