Today I am not showing a tutorial as much as an idea- turn your old sweaters into beautiful pillows! These make wonderful decorations, and are super simple to make. Best part- it will motivate you to move some of those old unworn items out of your closet!
Here’s what you’ll need:
-an old sweater
-pillow form or polyfill
First, you’ll need to felt your sweater, if it is wool. To do this, just put it through one hot cycle of the wash with detergent. If the sweater hasn’t shrunk to about half it’s size, run it through one more hot cycle. Go ahead and pop it in the dryer to dry- no need to worry about shrinking!
Next, lay out your sweater, and decide what area you’d like to cut out for your pillow. Then trace your pillow form (be sure to add an extra 3/4″ for seam allowance) and cut! It is easiest to just cut straight from the body of the sweater, so you have a backside cut as well (save the arms to make coffee cup cozies), but you could quilt together pieces of the sleeves to make two fabric squares.
When you have two fabric squares cut, sew up the sides, right sides facing in. Leave a generous opening on one side so that you can turn the pillow right side out, and slide your pillow form or fiberfill in. Close the opening with a straight stitch (you can also do this by hand if you are more comfortable).
Wrap with lace or satin ribbon, and give to friends, grandparents- or anyone who could use some extra cozy decorations!
