Summer evenings… they just call for lounging, eating fresh food and relaxing, don’t they? I LOVE picnic dinner ideas in the summer, so I recently headed to World Market to pick up some summer staples and share my top Summer Picnic Dinner Ideas with you!
I recently read an article about a group of friends who have a picnic club and head around to different parks each week with beautiful plates and gourmet meals, and how its brought them all closer together. I thought it was a fabulous idea- why not put a little more effort into summer picnics to make them completely fun and memorable?
First, it’s all about the setup. I headed to World Market to grab some Outdoor Dining Essentials and Outdoor Entertaining items to find everything I needed!
I grabbed a TON of fun and funky retro sodas as well as some sparkling pear and meyer lemon sodas for our picnic, as well as some acrylic stemless wine glasses (we might used ceramic plates, but wine glasses seemed a bridge too far). I set all the sodas up in this adorable blue soda storage crate, and we had an instant soda bar!
This is going to sound crazy, but I am addicted to kitchen towels for picnics. You’re outside. Spills happen, kids get messy… having more of a napkin comes in handy big time. And the adorable red and blue striped Mugla Tea Towels fit perfectly into my summer theme. They are also incredibly easy to wash and hold up great to repeated washes. If investing in a tablecloth for outside isn’t your thing, you can use a painters drop cloth. They are fairly water resistant, wash well, and incredibly inexpensive for the size.
For a little more festive fun, I added an Americana Garland and threw some 4th of July crackers in a wire stand. We love crackers at Christmas and were so happy to see them being made for other events!
Instead of using my big, funky plastic bowls, I opted to serve our food out of ceramic pie plates. I adore these plates and am probably going to start using them for dinner everynight… but they work especially well at a picnic! They hold everything in and are big enough to work as a serving platter. I need them in every color!
I set out some hanging tea light jars on the table (it was too windy to hang them from the trees) with battery operated lights. I also used one of the lanterns as an impromptu salsa server (picnics are all about creativity, right?) which ended up to be super cute.
Then, it’s all about the FOOD! We try to focus on fresh- grilled corn, sliced watermelon, fresh veggies in a salad, salsa and chips and of course a delicious burger like my Best Naked Burger Ever! Pick foods you can easily toss on a park grate or a portable grill, and pair them with fresh flavors that don’t require much prep or work. Adding gourmet foods like spicy salsas, chips, cheeses or salami give your picnic an artisan feel.. and are easy to travel with.
