How to Make this Festive Cheese Board

First assemble the following ingredients:

  • Colby jack cheese (16oz) – Colby Jack provides a mild, slightly sweet and nutty flavor.
  • Pepper jack cheese (8oz) – Pepper Jack adds a spicy kick with its peppery notes, use mozzarella if you don’t want the heat.
  • Green and red grapes – Red grapes offer a sweet, slightly tart flavor, while green grapes are crisp and zesty.
  • Brie – brie cheese delights with its rich, creamy, and slightly earthy taste.
  • Dry salami (24 oz) – dry salami brings a savory, slightly smoky and complex flavor to the cheese board.
  • Crackers – For a cheese board, opt for a variety of crackers such as classic water biscuits, rustic artisanal bread slices, and flavorful seeded crackers to complement and enhance the flavors of the cheeses.
  • Rosemary, sage, and cranberries – fresh herbs and cranberries add wonderful fresh green and red for a festive pop of color.

Tips and Tricks to a Perfect Cheese Board

Fresh Herbs for Decor: Use sprigs of rosemary or thyme to decorate the board, giving it a festive and aromatic touch.

Sweet and Savory Balance: Balance the savory elements with sweet items like honey, fruit preserves, or dark chocolate.

Cheese Prep: Take cheeses out of the fridge an hour before serving to let them come to room temperature for optimal flavor.

Label the Cheeses: Use small labels or cards to identify the different types of cheese, especially if they are unusual or artisanal varieties.

Board Layout: Start by placing the cheeses on the board, then add meats and larger items, and fill in the gaps with smaller items like nuts and fruits.

Serving Tools: Provide separate knives for each cheese, especially for strong and soft varieties, to avoid mixing flavors.

Themed Elements: Add Christmas-themed decorations or serving pieces, like a Santa-shaped cheese knife or a red and green platter, to enhance the festive mood.

Interactive Fun: Consider a build-your-own-cracker station with different spreads, toppings, and crackers for a more interactive experience.

Consider Dietary Restrictions: Include gluten-free crackers and dairy-free cheese options if you’re expecting guests with dietary restrictions.

Drink Pairings: Offer a selection of wines, craft beers, or non-alcoholic beverages that pair well with your cheese selections.

Experiment and Have Fun: Don’t be afraid to try new combinations and layouts – the goal is to create a delightful and tasty experience for you and your guests!

Colorful Additions: Incorporate festive colors with red and green grapes, cranberries, and pomegranate seeds for a visually appealing board.

Texture Contrast: Add a variety of textures with crunchy nuts, crisp crackers, and chewy dried fruits like apricots or figs.

FAQs

How much cheese should I plan per person?

Generally, plan for about 1-2 ounces of each cheese per person if the board is part of a larger meal. If it’s the main fare, increase to 3-4 ounces per person.

Can I prepare my cheese board in advance?

Yes, you can arrange the board a few hours ahead and cover it. However, take it out 30-60 minutes before serving to let the cheese reach room temperature.

Are there any vegetarian options for a cheese board?

Yes, include vegetarian cheeses (without animal rennet) and focus on fruits, nuts, vegetables, and breads. Omit meat and use plant-based alternatives.

How do I pair wines with my cheese board?

Pair light cheeses with white wines or light reds, and stronger cheeses with bold reds. Sparkling wines go well with creamy cheeses, and sweet wines complement blue cheeses.

How can I accommodate guests with food allergies?

Include gluten-free crackers, nut-free options, and label any cheeses with common allergens like blue cheese. Provide separate knives to avoid cross-contamination.

Any tips for a budget-friendly cheese board?

Focus on a smaller selection of quality cheeses, bulk up with affordable items like bread, fruits, and nuts, and look for special offers or cheese ends at delis.

What to Enjoy with your Christmas Cheese Board

Assorted Wines: Pair your cheese board with a variety of wines such as a crisp Chardonnay, a light Pinot Noir, or a sweet Riesling to complement the different cheese flavors.

Sparkling Beverages: Include sparkling water, champagne, or prosecco for a festive touch.

Warm Ciders: Serve spiced apple cider or mulled wine, perfect for cozy, festive gatherings.

Non-Alcoholic Options: Have a variety of juices, herbal teas, and non-alcoholic sparkling drinks for those who prefer them.

Gourmet Coffee: A rich, aromatic coffee can be a delightful accompaniment, especially with creamier cheeses.

Fresh Fruit: In addition to grapes, consider slices of pear, apple, or figs for a refreshing counterbalance to the rich cheeses.

Nuts and Seeds: Offer a mix of nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans, and seeds like pumpkin or sunflower for added texture and flavor.

Olives and Pickles: Include a variety of olives, gherkins, or pickled vegetables for a tangy contrast.

Honey and Jams: Provide honey, fig jam, or apricot preserves for a sweet complement to both soft and hard cheeses.

Artisanal Breads: Serve slices of fresh baguette, sourdough, or rye bread as an alternative to crackers.

Chocolate: Add a touch of indulgence with dark chocolate or chocolate-covered nuts and fruits.

Dips and Spreads: Include hummus, tapenade, or a creamy blue cheese spread for added variety.
