This Crispy Tofu Stir Fry Tastes Like Takeout: This crispy tofu stir fry is the recipe I make when I want a dinner that feels like takeout — but lighter, fresher, and actually easy. The tofu gets marinated, tossed in cornstarch, and air fried until golden and crunchy, then tossed with crisp-tender veggies in a glossy stir fry sauce that clings to every bite.

And then there’s the part that makes it extra addictive: a quick spicy soy drizzle at the end. It’s salty, spicy, bright, and you can add as much (or as little) as you want. If you’ve ever struggled with tofu being bland or soft, this method is the fix — crispy edges, big flavor, and a weeknight-friendly cook time.

How to Make Crispy Tofu Stir Fry

This crispy tofu stir fry features air-fried marinated tofu tossed with broccoli, celery, and onion in a savory, glossy stir fry sauce, finished with a spicy soy drizzle and sesame seeds. It’s a fast, flavorful weeknight dinner that tastes better than takeout.

Ingredients for Crispy Tofu Stir Fry

We will need these ingredients to make this stir fry:

  • Extra-firm tofu – The hearty protein base; pressing removes water so it crisps up in the air fryer and soaks up the marinade.
  • Soy sauce (or tamari) for tofu – Adds salty umami flavor and seasons the tofu from the inside out.
  • Rice vinegar (or lime juice) for tofu – Brightens the tofu and balances the richness of the sesame oil.
  • Sesame oil for tofu – Adds that nutty, toasted stir-fry flavor that makes it taste restaurant-style.
  • Ginger – Brings warm, fresh zing that lifts the whole dish.
  • Garlic – Adds bold, savory depth and classic stir-fry aroma.
  • Cornstarch (for tofu) – Creates a light, crispy coating when air fried and helps the tofu stay crunchy longer.
  • Cooking spray or neutral oil – Helps the tofu brown evenly and get extra crisp without deep frying.
  • Neutral oil (for veggies) – Handles high heat so the vegetables sauté quickly without burning.
  • Onion – Adds sweetness and depth as it softens and lightly caramelizes.
  • Broccoli – Brings crunch, color, and a hearty bite that holds up well in sauce.
  • Celery – Adds fresh crunch and a savory backbone that keeps the stir fry light and snappy.
  • Soy sauce (or tamari) for stir fry sauce – The main savory foundation that ties everything together.
  • Water – Loosens the sauce so it coats evenly instead of becoming too salty.
  • Rice vinegar (in sauce) – Adds tang and brightness to balance the soy and sweetness.
  • Honey/brown sugar (or maple) – Adds sweetness for that classic glossy stir-fry balance.
  • Sesame oil (in sauce) – Deepens flavor and adds a rich, toasted finish.
  • Cornstarch (in sauce) – Thickens the sauce so it clings to the tofu and vegetables.
  • Soy sauce (spicy drizzle) – Adds an extra punch of salty umami right at the end.
  • Sriracha/chili garlic sauce – Brings customizable heat and a spicy kick.
  • Rice vinegar (optional, drizzle) – Adds a final pop of brightness so the finish tastes fresh, not heavy.
  • Sesame seeds – Add nutty crunch and a finished, restaurant-style look.
  • Green onions (optional) – Add fresh bite, color, and a bright finish.

Crispy Tofu and Vegetables Step by Step

Crispy Tofu Stir Fry Tips & Tricks

Press the tofu well. Less water = more crunch. Even 10–15 minutes helps a lot.

Cornstarch is the crispy secret. A light dusting gives a crunchy shell without deep frying.

Preheat the air fryer. Hot air = faster crisping and better browning.

Don’t overcrowd tofu. Give cubes space so they crisp instead of steaming.

Keep veggies crisp-tender. Overcooked veggies make the dish feel heavy and mushy.

Sauce thickens fast. Add it and toss for 1–2 minutes until glossy.

Finish with spicy soy at the end. It keeps the flavor bold and lets you control heat.

How to Press Tofu Fast

If you’re short on time, you don’t need a fancy tofu press.

Quick method (10–15 minutes):

  1. Drain tofu and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  2. Place it on a plate.
  3. Set something heavy on top — like a cast iron skillet or a few cookbooks.
  4. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes while you prep the veggies and sauce.

For even faster pressing, slice the tofu block in half horizontally before pressing — thinner pieces release water quicker.

Less water = crispier tofu.

How to Make It Vegan + Gluten-Free

This recipe is naturally very adaptable:

To make it fully vegan:

  • Use maple syrup instead of honey in the stir fry sauce.

To make it gluten-free:

  • Use tamari or certified gluten-free soy sauce.
  • Double-check your chili garlic sauce label.
  • Confirm your cornstarch is gluten-free (most are, but always check).

Everything else in the recipe is naturally plant-based and gluten-friendly.

Meal Prep + Reheating Tips

This stir fry works great for meal prep — with one small trick.

For best texture:

  • Store crispy tofu separately from the vegetables and sauce if possible.
  • Keep everything in airtight containers in the fridge up to 4 days.

Reheating:

  • Reheat veggies and sauce in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add tofu at the end to warm through without losing too much crispness.
  • For extra crunch, pop the tofu back in the air fryer at 375°F for 3–4 minutes before serving.

Pro tip: Add a fresh drizzle of spicy soy sauce and a sprinkle of sesame seeds after reheating to wake up the flavors.

Instructions

  • Press and cube tofu. Press tofu 10–15 minutes, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
  • Marinate tofu. Toss tofu with soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. Let sit 10–15 minutes while you prep everything else.
  • Coat tofu. Sprinkle cornstarch over tofu and toss until lightly coated.

  • Make sauces. Whisk stir fry sauce ingredients until smooth. Stir together spicy soy sauce ingredients and set aside.
  • Stir fry veggies. Heat 1 tablespoon neutral oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, broccoli, and celery and cook 4–6 minutes until crisp-tender.
  • Add stir fry sauce. Pour in stir fry sauce and cook 1–2 minutes, tossing until glossy and thickened.
  • Finish. Add crispy tofu (fold in gently or serve on top to keep it crisp). Drizzle with spicy soy sauce to taste. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions.

Notes

Pressing tofu is key for crispiness — drier tofu browns better.
Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook tofu in batches if needed.
For gluten-free: use tamari and check chili sauce labels.
For best leftovers: store tofu separately and re-crisp in the air fryer at 375°F for 3–4 minutes.

Do I have to press tofu?

Yes – pressing is the easiest way to get crispy tofu. It removes water so the tofu browns instead of steaming.

Can I use frozen tofu?

Can I make this gluten Free?

Yes – use tamari instead of soy sauce and double-check your chili garlic sauce label.

Is this recipe vegan?

Yes if you use maple syrup instead of honey. If you’re looking for a Lent friendly recipe, you can use honey.
