Anyone who knows me knows I am absolutely obsessed with visiting European Christmas Markets in winter – and Prague Christmas Markets are consistently one of my favorites to visit, year after year, for dreamy views, delicious foods, and lots of fun!
If you’re dreaming of a magical Christmas filled with twinkling lights, historic architecture, and festive cheer, Prague is the place to be – it has remained one of my favorite Christmas Market cities for years, and is always completely gorgeous.
The Czech capital is known for its fairy-tale beauty with spires rising up in every direction, and it transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season.
The city’s famous Christmas markets are among the best in Europe, combining rich traditions, delicious food, and unique shopping experiences!
Where to Find the Best Christmas Markets in Prague
Prague’s Christmas markets are spread across the city, but the main ones are conveniently located in the Old Town and Wenceslas Square, making it easy to explore them all on foot.
Old Town Square Christmas Market: The most iconic and popular market in Prague, the Old Town Square Christmas Market is set against the stunning backdrop of the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Astronomical Clock. The huge Christmas tree, which is always sourced from Czech forests, is illuminated with thousands of lights, creating a magical atmosphere.
- What to See: The central nativity scene, live performances, and choirs bring traditional Czech Christmas to life. The market’s wooden stalls sell a range of handcrafted goods, from glass ornaments to wooden toys and jewelry.
- Don’t Miss: Climbing up the Old Town Hall Tower for a panoramic view of the market and the Old Town (hot tip: take the elevator up, and walk down!) It’s especially breathtaking after dark, or at sunset, when the Christmas lights sparkle over the square.
Wenceslas Square Christmas Market: Just a short walk from Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square hosts another popular Christmas market. Set along the grand boulevard, this market is known for its vibrant energy and beautiful displays. With the statue of Saint Wenceslas and the National Museum as a backdrop, it’s a great place to soak in the festive atmosphere. There is also ample parking closeby.
- What to See: Traditional Czech products like Marionettes, candles, and pottery are on display. The market also features live music performances and a second Christmas tree that complements the one in Old Town Square.
- Don’t Miss: Trying Czech sausage (klobása) and a cup of Sva?ák (mulled wine) as you stroll along the lively street.
Peace Square Christmas Market: For a more local and far less crowded market, head to the Peace Square Christmas Market in the Vinohrady district. The market is in front of the St. Ludmila Church, and is smaller, but full of charm.
- What to See: The peaceful setting and local vendors make it a great place to buy authentic, handmade gifts like Czech ceramics, artisan candles, and textiles.
- Don’t Miss: Taking a moment to admire the stunning neo-Gothic church, which is often beautifully lit up for the holidays.
Prague Castle Christmas Market: Located within the historic Prague Castle complex, this market is perfect for combining a visit to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks with holiday shopping.
- What to See: Set in St. George’s Square, the market is cozy but filled with unique, high-quality gifts, including traditional Czech glassware, handmade soaps, and decorations.
- Don’t Miss: Exploring Prague Castle and catching a glimpse of the breathtaking views of the city from its vantage points!
What to Eat at Christmas Markets in Prague
Prague’s Christmas markets offer plenty of traditional Czech foods that are perfect for keeping you warm while exploring.
Trdelník/Trdlo (Chimney Cake): A sweet treat made from rolled dough, grilled over an open flame, and coated with sugar and cinnamon. You can enjoy it plain or with fillings like Nutella or ice cream.
Sva?ák (Mulled Wine): Warm up with a cup of sva?ák, Czech mulled wine spiced with cinnamon, cloves, and citrus. It’s the perfect drink to sip on as you explore the markets.
Klobása (Czech Sausage): Czech klobása is a hearty grilled sausage served with a slice of bread and mustard or ketchup. It’s a delicious snack to enjoy while wandering through the market stalls or near the tree to hear carolers.
Medovina (Honey Wine): For something sweeter, try Medovina, a warm honey wine that’s popular at the Christmas markets. Its rich, sweet flavor is perfect for a chilly evening.
Prague Ham: Prague ham is a must-eat at the Prague Christmas Markets because of its rich, smoky flavor and traditional preparation! It is slow-roasted on an open spit, so you can warm up next to the fire while they slice you some of the ham as it sizzles over the charcoal fire. It is served with a slice of bread, and one of my favorite must-eats at the Prague markets!
What to See and Do in Prague During Christmas:
While the Christmas markets are the main draw, there’s plenty more to explore in Prague during the holiday season.
- Visit Prague Castle: No trip to Prague is complete without visiting Prague Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in the world. During Christmas, the castle grounds are particularly magical, and the market in St. George’s Square is an added bonus. Be sure to visit St. Vitus Cathedral while you’re there.
- Explore Charles Bridge: The historic Charles Bridge is one of Prague’s most iconic landmarks. Although it can get crowded, the bridge offers stunning views of the city. Sunrise is phenomenal on the Charles Bridge, and at sunset, you can see city workers turning off the gas lamps!
- Admire the Astronomical Clock: In Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock is a must-see. During the Christmas season, the surrounding market makes it even more special. Be sure to watch the clock strike the hour to see the famous procession of the Twelve Apostles – and if you head to the top of the tower, be sure to keep an eye out for some of the clock pieces!
- Take a Christmas River Cruise: For a unique perspective of the city, take a river cruise along the Vltava River. You’ll enjoy views of the city’s landmarks, such as Prague Castle and Charles Bridge, while sipping on mulled wine and enjoying holiday treats.
- Attend a Christmas Concert: Prague’s many churches and concert halls host concerts year round, and many offer Christmas programs. You can listen to classical music, including works by Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi, in historic settings such as St. Nicholas Church or Rudolfinum.
- Book a Market Tour: Booking a tour of the Christmas markets with a guide is an easy way to get acclimated quickly, learn about traditional Czech foods and Christmas traditions, and is always so fun!
