Bamberg is one of my favorite stops when touring Christmas markets in Germany – the winding market around the old town, cozy half-timber buildings along the river, and gorgeous views all around – Bamberg is such a picture-perfect Christmas market stop.

Nestled in the heart of Bavaria, Bamberg is one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bamberg is often called “Little Venice” and is a must-visit for history lovers, foodies, and just anyone seeking the charm of an old-world European town. Here’s my guide to experiencing the best of Bamberg!

What to Eat in Bamberg

Bamberg is known for its great food – and we weren’t disappointed visiting. There is so much great food in Bamberg, be sure to look out for:

  • Schäufele (Roast Pork Shoulder): A Bavarian classic, Schäufele is slow-roasted pork shoulder served with crispy crackling, potato dumplings, and sauerkraut. The dish is known for its savory flavor and tender texture, making it a must-try for meat lovers.
  • Bamberger Zwiebel (Stuffed Onion): One of Bamberg’s specialties, Bamberger Zwiebel is a large, hollowed-out onion stuffed with minced pork and roasted to perfection. It’s often served with mashed potatoes and gravy, offering a hearty and delicious taste of local cuisine.
  • Rauchbier (Smoked Beer) – Bamberg is famous for its unique Rauchbier, a dark, smoked beer brewed with malted barley dried over an open flame. The smoky flavor is distinct and might take some getting used to, but it’s a local experience you shouldn’t miss! Head to Schlenkerla Tavern to try one of the best Rauchbiers in the city.
  • Bratwurst: You can’t visit Bamberg without trying Bratwurst. These flavorful sausages are usually grilled and served with mustard and a crispy bread roll. They’re perfect for a quick snack while exploring the city.
  • Kaiserschmarrn: For dessert, try Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy shredded pancake typically served with powdered sugar and apple or plum compote. This sweet treat is a perfect way to end a hearty Franconian meal.
