German Baked Apples

This recipe is a spin off classic German baked apples – except we’re baking them with figs, instead of raisins.

I was once making German baked apples for my daughter but I didn’t have any raisins on hand – German apples are traditionally baked with golden raisins on top. I did have some dried figs, and decided to give them a shot – and I loved how it turned out so much, I wanted to share the recipe with all of you!

We’re otherwise sticking to the classic German recipe of baking apples, butter, confectioner’s sugar, whopped walnuts and a bit of cinnamon for a stuffed apple that is melt in your mouth delicious.

This recipe is simple – you’ll need an apple corer, or simply use a butter knife – you can also cut the apple apart and put it back together using a toothpick if you’d like, or bake it in a ramekin to hold it together.

These baked apples are hearty and tasty – you can pour a little whiskey, brandy, or rum over the top for a boozy dessert, too!

We like to serve these with a little whipped cream, but vanilla ice cream is great with it too. It’s also delicious with a cup of Israeli Cardamom Coffee, a Scotch and Soda Recipe, a Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa Bomb, or a glass of Traditional French Vin Chaud (Mulled Wine)!

How To Bake Apples

Baking apples is super simple – we’re first scrubbing them, then cutting out the core, then stuffing with butter, sugar, and walnuts and baking until soft and golden brown.

Add figs at the very end of baking, just to warm for last five minutes or so of baketime.

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Grease a glass baking dish.
  • Using an apple corer or butter knife, cut core of apple out of each apple, leaving 1/4″ base at bottom of apple in tact.
  • In a bowl, mix butter, walnuts, cinnamon.
  • Spoon walnut mixture into apples.
  • Arrange in baking dish and bake until softened, about 40 minutes.
  • Top with diced figs.
  • Bake additional 5 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and carefully plate – caution – apples will be extremely hot.
  • Top with whipped cream or ice cream.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Tips To Perfect Baked Apples and FAQs

Don’t add figs to top of apples as they go in oven – they will dry out. Add just at end of cook time to soften and warm.

Some people like really soft baked apples, and some people like them a bit firmer – you can cook your apples to your preference.

Make your apples a bit boozy by pouring an ounce of rum, vodka, whiskey, or brandy into each apple.
