Homemade Banana Strawberry Dog Treats

We go through a lot of dog treats with your labradoodle, especially when we were training her. While its easy and pretty inexpensive to buy dog treats I started looking into the ingredients are was really unimpressed, even with the more natural expensive ones. I decided to make my own recipe and after some trial and error came up with these. My homemade dog treats use whole wheat flour for the base which makes them denser and helps them hold together well when we are out on a walk, or they are in a bag. My dog loves peanut butter, so I had to add that, and bananas and strawberries added a wonderful texture and smell to these treats. I use silicone dog treat molds, but you can also just bake these as balls. I hope your four legged friend enjoys these treats!

How to Make Homemade Dog Treats

First assemble the following ingredients:

  • Egg (1) – Eggs act as a binding agent in homemade dog treats and provide protein and essential nutrients for your dog.
  • Peanut butter (1/3 cup) – Natural peanut butter adds flavor and healthy fats, but make sure it’s free of xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • Whole Wheat Flour (1 cup) – Whole wheat or oat flour gives structure to dog treats, while offering a source of fiber and energy.
  • Quick oats (1/2 cup) – Oats are a great source of fiber and help create a chewy texture that many dogs enjoy.
  • Mashed banana (1/2 cup) – Bananas add natural sweetness and potassium, making the treats nutritious and easy to blend.
  • Strawberries (5) – Fresh or frozen strawberries contribute antioxidants, vitamin C, and a burst of fruity flavor that dogs love.

Use this Method

Mix. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and knead until a dough ball forms. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour.

Form. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface until it’s about an inch thick. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters or treat molds.

Bake. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Place the cutouts or the mold sheets on a baking pan and bake for about 20-25 minutes.

Cool. Remove them from the oven and let them cool completely before handling.

Tips and Tricks for Making Banana Strawberry Dog TReats

Use ripe bananas – The riper the bananas, the sweeter and softer they’ll be, making them easier to mash and blend into the dough.

Opt for fresh or frozen strawberries – Both work well, but make sure to chop them into small pieces to ensure even distribution throughout the treats.

Go flour-free or use whole wheat flour – Whole wheat flour is a healthier option, but oat or almond flour can be good alternatives if your dog has sensitivities.

Add peanut butter for extra flavor – Make sure it’s natural peanut butter without added sugar or xylitol, which is harmful to dogs.

Use silicone molds for fun shapes – Silicone molds make it easier to remove the treats once baked, and you can choose shapes your dog will love.

Bake at a low temperature – Around 325°F (160°C) ensures the treats bake through without burning, and helps them dry out for a longer shelf life.

Let the treats cool completely before serving – This allows them to firm up and ensures they’re safe for your dog to eat.

Store in the fridge or freezer – Homemade dog treats can spoil, so refrigerate them for up to a week or freeze them for longer-lasting treats.

Adjust size based on your dog’s breed – Make smaller treats for small dogs and larger ones for bigger dogs to ensure appropriate portion sizes.

Test a small piece first – Always let your dog try a small piece of the new treat to ensure they don’t have any allergies or sensitivities.

FAQs

Can I use frozen strawberries instead of fresh?

Yes, frozen strawberries work well. Just make sure to thaw them first and drain any excess water before mixing them into the dough.

What kind of flour is best for dog treats?

Whole wheat flour is commonly used, but you can also use oat, rice, or almond flour if your dog has wheat sensitivities.

How long can I store homemade dog treats?

Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week, or freeze them for up to three months to keep them fresh longer.

How do I know if the treats are fully baked?

The treats should be firm and lightly golden on the edges. If they are still soft or doughy in the center, bake for a few more minutes.

Can I make these treats grain-free?

Yes, you can substitute the flour with a grain-free option like almond or coconut flour, though the texture may differ slightly.

Are there any other ingredients I can add for flavor?

You can add a spoonful of plain yogurt, pumpkin purée, or unsweetened applesauce for added flavor and nutrition, as long as they are safe for dogs.

How small should I cut the strawberries?

Chop the strawberries into small, bite-sized pieces to ensure even distribution in the dough and prevent large chunks that might be hard for smaller dogs to chew.

Can I give these treats to my puppy?

Yes, as long as the ingredients are safe and your puppy is old enough to handle solid treats, these can be given in small portions. Always check with your vet if unsure.
