This Easy Herb Centerpiece that is not only pretty- it makes a perfect way to grow herbs inside all year long, and is a great way to manage water usage for herbs that use more water.
I’m so excited to share the final fall installment of the La Crema Farm to Table at Home series with my friend Megan of the Freckled Italian- and this is one of my favorite projects we came up with! Everyday dinners can seem rushed and not so special- but we’re sharing some of our tips to an everyday elegant table setup that you can use any day of the week to take your table from boring to beautiful in no time.
One of the ideas we tried to really incorporate into our dinners was a focus on sustainability. Farm to Table eating takes a little planning to make it both affordable and sustainable- but with a few tricks, it can be done! While eating with the seasons is the easiest way to have sustainable farm fresh foods, simple touches like indoor herbs can go a long way in adding delicious summery flavors all year long.
Taking a sustainable approach doesn’t just apply to the foods you pick out- it can also be seen in decor picks! I love this easy herb centerpiece for effortlessly elegant decor (that also provides fresh herbs all year long) because it can easily be incorporated into decor in other parts of your home when you’re not hosting a dinner- and can easily be updated with different herbs- for a great way to get your decor to do double duty!
Adding a living herb centerpiece to your table is a quick and easy way to bring a unique touch to dress up a weeknight meal. I’m a big believer of making everyday special- whether it’s coming up with simple and pretty everyday decor, to a meal that is comforting and impressive, or serving my favorite wines. For me, La Crema’s Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are my everyday elegant wines- they are rich and delicious, and pair well with a wide variety of dishes. The pinot noir is light enough to not overpower delicate meats- and the chardonnay is buttery enough to not be overpowered by strong herb flavors or fatty meals- making them great multi-taskers!
Growing your own herbs inside also helps with water usage- the temperatures don’t get as hot (or cold), and help your plants use water more efficiently. As long as you give your plants plenty of natural sunlight, they will grow and thrive- and provide you with a delicious addition to meals all year long!
Displaying herbs as a centerpiece is incredibly easy. I love filling galvanized steel buckets, trays, and platters with them- I pot them in small pots and then place them inside the trays. You want a tray with a solid base and a pot with holes in it so you can water your plant without fear of overwatering- or dripping water onto the table.
This is a great way to add decor all over your house, really- I like to have each herb in smaller pots so that I can change them up and move them around based on what kind of meal we are having. You can also fill bowls, pitchers, or glasses with plant pots for instant decor! And unlike bouquets of flowers, these stay beautiful long after your party is over- and help you grow plants that might be drought/freeze-affected in your climate.
