This Is My Go-To Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks Recipe: Chicken drumsticks can be tricky to get just right – they can be either rubbery or dry. After a lot of testing, this air fryer method became my go-to because it makes drumsticks unbelievably crispy on the outside and juicy inside every time!

I make these juicy on the inside, crunchy on the outside Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks at least once a week! This easy chicken dinner is one of my family’s favorites, is really budget friendly, and comes together with almost no effort. This recipe just works, every time – with no fussy ingredients, no deep fryer, no messy oil, just a simple seasoning and the air fryer doing all the work!

Why These Air Fryer Drumsticks Are So Good

Air fryer chicken drumsticks are one of the easiest ways to get crispy, juicy chicken with almost no effort. The air fryer circulates hot air around the chicken, which helps render the fat under the skin while cooking the meat evenly. The result is chicken drumsticks that have crispy golden skin on the outside and tender, juicy meat inside– without needing breading or deep frying.

Air Fryer Chicken Drumstick Recipe Ingredients

To make this recipe, you will need:

  • 8 chicken drumsticks – pick high quality chicken drumsticks that are fresh or thawed. Pat chicken drumsticks dry with paper towels to make sure the oil and herbs stick, as water and packaging liquid can make it harder for them to stick to the chicken.
  • 2 tbsp olive oil – you can use olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, or any oil you prefer to cook with. We love the classic olive oil flavor with chicken.
  • 1 tsp celtic sea salt – grab a quality sea salt you love the flavor of. We like using celtic sea salt because it is saltier, so you can use less salt than regular table salt.
  • 1 tsp fresh cracked pepper – using fresh cracked black pepper develops a better flavor and a bit of heat.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder – garlic powder brings a rich, delicious flavor to chicken.
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika – paprika gives a hint of color to the chicken, and an earthy, smoky flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp cumin – cumin is earthy and brings out a “meaty” flavor in chicken.

Step By Step Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, we’re going to follow this method:

Use Oil

Place drumsticks in a bowl or a plastic bag and drizzle with olive oil. Toss to coat.

Time can vary based on drumstick size, so do check the temperature with a digital thermometer after cooking to prevent over or under cooking.

The Secret to Crispy Air Fryer Drumsticks

If you want perfectly crispy air fryer chicken drumsticks, a few simple tricks make a big difference. The air fryer already does a great job circulating hot air around the chicken, but following these tips helps the skin turn golden and crisp while keeping the meat juicy inside.

  1. Dry the chicken first
    Before seasoning, pat the drumsticks dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture from the skin helps it crisp up better in the air fryer instead of steaming.
  2. Use a little oil
    Lightly coating the drumsticks with olive oil (or another neutral oil) helps the seasoning stick and encourages the skin to brown and crisp as it cooks.
  3. Cook at 400°F
    Cooking drumsticks at 400°F gives the best balance of crispy skin and juicy meat. The higher heat helps render the fat under the skin, which creates that classic crispy texture.
  4. Don’t overcrowd the basket
    Arrange the drumsticks in a single layer with a little space between each piece. Air fryers work by circulating hot air, so leaving room between the chicken helps it cook evenly and get crispy all the way around.

Temperature Guide for Air Fryer Chicken

Cooking chicken at the right temperature is key to getting crispy skin and juicy meat.

For air fryer drumsticks, 375°F to 400°F is the sweet spot. Higher heat helps render the fat in the skin and create that crisp exterior while keeping the inside tender.

Here’s a quick temperature guide:

  • 375°F – Juicier chicken with slightly softer skin
  • 400°F – Crispier skin and faster cooking time
  • Internal temperature goal: 165°F minimum (175-185°F is even better for dark meat)

Dark meat like drumsticks actually becomes more tender when cooked slightly higher than 165°F, which helps break down connective tissue.

How Long to Cook Chicken Drumsticks in Air Fryer

Air fryer chicken drumsticks typically cook in 18–22 minutes, depending on their size and the temperature of your air fryer.

General cooking guide:

  • 375°F: 22–25 minutes
  • 400°F: 18–20 minutes

For best results:

  1. Arrange drumsticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  2. Cook halfway, then flip the drumsticks.
  3. Continue cooking until the internal temperature reaches 165°F or higher.

If the drumsticks are large, they may take a few extra minutes to cook through.

Tips to Air Fry Crunchy Chicken Drumsticks

Be sure to check my top tips for perfect air fried chicken below:

Preheat air fryer. Run your air fryer for a few minutes before adding the food so it is hot and ready to go when you go to air fry your chicken. This is optional, but I feel it helps the skin to puff up and get a crispy “fried” texture.

Sauce at the end. If you’re going to sauce your drumsticks, wait until they have cooked and crisped to toss in sauce. You also can layer the sauce on to get a crunchy “crust” throughout the cooking, similar to my baked BBQ Chicken drumsticks.

Don’t peek too often. Since air fryers are completely sealed off, it’s hard to judge your chicken’s doneness by the look of it. Check the temperature of the chicken when you’re already opening the air fryer to flip them – don’t open it just to check the temperature or too much heat will escape.

Use a digital thermometer. When your timer is done, immediately test the temperature of the chicken pieces with a digital thermometer inserted into the middle of the thickest part of the chicken drumstick without touching bone. Chicken should be cooked to 165 degrees internally. If chicken has not met 165 degrees internally, add another 2-5 minutes to cook time.

Don’t crowd basket. Air fryers help get hot air to circulate around the chicken drumstick to get a heat so high it makes meat taste fried – and to do that, it helps to not crowd the pan. Put the chicken in your air fryer pan in a way they aren’t crowding each other – it makes a huge difference.

Can You Cook Frozen Drumsticks in an Air Fryer?

Yes, you can cook frozen chicken drumsticks in an air fryer, though they will take a little longer to cook.

To cook frozen drumsticks:

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
  2. Cook the drumsticks for 10 minutes to thaw.
  3. Remove them, add oil and seasoning.
  4. Return to the air fryer and cook another 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Always check that the internal temperature reaches at least 165°F before serving.

How to Reheat Air Fryer Chicken

One of the best things about air fryer chicken is how well it reheats.

To reheat drumsticks and keep them crispy:

Air fryer method (best):

  1. Preheat air fryer to 375°F
  2. Heat chicken for 4-6 minutes

This restores the crispy skin while warming the meat.

You can also reheat in the oven at 375°F for 10-12 minutes, but avoid microwaving if possible since it can make the skin soft.

How to Tell When Chicken Is Done Without Cutting It

The easiest and most reliable way to tell if chicken is done without cutting into it is to use a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the drumstick without touching the bone. Chicken is safe to eat when it reaches 165°F internal temperature.

For chicken drumsticks and other dark meat, many cooks prefer cooking slightly longer until the internal temperature reaches 175-185°F. This higher temperature helps break down connective tissue, making the meat even more tender and juicy.

If you don’t have a thermometer, there are a few visual cues that can help:

  • Clear juices: When pierced with a fork, the juices should run clear rather than pink.
  • Firm texture: Fully cooked chicken feels firm and springs back slightly when pressed.
  • Golden, crisp skin: The outside should be deeply golden and crispy, especially when air fried.
  • Looser bone: The meat often pulls slightly away from the bone when fully cooked.

However, a thermometer is always the most accurate and safest method, especially when cooking chicken in an air fryer where cook times can vary depending on size and model.

Make Ahead + Reheating Tips

Air fryer drumsticks are great for meal prep and leftovers.

Refrigerator storage:

  • Store cooked drumsticks in an airtight container
  • Keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days

Freezing:

  • Freeze cooked drumsticks for up to 3 months
  • Wrap tightly or store in freezer bags

Reheating:

Reheat in the air fryer at 375°F for 5-7 minutes to restore crispy skin.

This recipe was designed to work with different types of air fryers – so the time listed is an estimate. Your air fryer might take a bit longer than time listed. Aim for around 15-20 checking at 10 and 15 minutes to see how the temperature is progressing.

This recipe was designed after testing in the Instant Pot Air fryer, Instant Pot with Crisping Lid broiler function, Ninja Foodi + Broiler lid, and the Phillips Air Fryer.
Cooktime was slightly different with each appliance, but each resulted in perfect air fryer drumsticks. Check chicken legs as you cook to make sure they are done to your preference!

Should I Marinate Chicken Drumsticks Before Air Frying?

I personally always marinate chicken before cooking – even just 30 minutes in some olive oil, lemon juice, and herbs can infuse a ton of flavor into your chicken. This recipe was designed to boost flavor regardless, so if you don’t have time to marinate, no worries!

How long do chicken drumsticks last?

Chicken drumsticks can be stored in an airtight container for up to four days, or frozen for up to four months.

When are drumsticks cooked?

Chicken is fully cooked at 175 degrees internal temperature. You want to be sure you’re measuring the thickest part of your drumstick to be sure all of the meat is cooked through – but don’t hit the bone when using a thermometer, as it will throw off results.
Chicken drumstick meat pulls away from the bone slightly when it is cooked, if you see this, your chicken is likely done.

Can I add sauce to drumsticks?

Adding sauce is a great way to layer flavor onto your chicken legs- there are two ways to do this. We love to cook our chicken first, getting a crispy, crunchy skin, and then toss in sauce – similar to chicken wings. You can also crisp chicken, toss in sauce, and continue cooking in the air fryer, to build a u0022crustu0022 of the sauce as the chicken cooks. Do not add sauce early, as it will keep chicken flabby.
