How To Make Shamrock Gummies
Making homemade chewy gummies is a great activity to do with your kids – these candies are less sweet than store-bought candy, have less sugar, and are customizable – you can use apple sauce or other fruit sauces, and you can add in other flavors as you’d like!
We’re rolling these gummies in granulated sugar and cutting them in a shamrock shape to give a fun and festive Saint Patricks Day vibe – they are so fun for classroom parties, leprechaun treats, and more!
Irish Jello Gummy Ingredients
To make homemade gummies, you’ll need:
- 1 1/2 cups applesauce – applesauce gives a light fruit flavor without being overly sweet. You can use other fruit sauces too!
- 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar – we will use sugar to sweeten fruit candy as well as roll them in for a finished appearance.
- 2 3 oz boxes of lime Jell-O – lime jello gives us a bright, bold green color and nice flavor. You can use other flavors if you like, but for a shamrock green, we prefer lime.
- 2 packs of unflavored gelatin – unflavored gelatin helps provide structure for fruit chews and gives them a bouncy, chewy texture.

Tips and Tricks to Perfect Shamrock Gummies
Mix up the color. This recipe can easily be changed to make gummies for other holidays besides St. Patrick’s Day. Add some red for Christmas with an ornament cutter or red, white, and blue streaked for the 4th of July!
Choose your fruity base wisely. Applesauce keeps these gummies less sweet and adds light fruit flavor; feel free to swap in other fruit sauces for flavor twists (just adjust sweetness to taste).
Avoid sticking. Dip your cookie cutter into sugar before cutting each shamrock it keeps the shapes neat and makes release easier.
Color & holiday versatility. While lime gives that classic shamrock green, you can swap Jell-O flavor and cutters for other holidays hearts for Valentine’s, stars for the 4th of July, etc.!
Chill patience pays off. Proper chilling ensures you get clean cuts and the right gummy texture don’t skip the 2 hours!

St. Patrick’s Day Gummies FAQs
Homemade gummies last for up to two weeks when stored in an airtight container.
There are lots of adult additives you can add to homemade gummies – but as we’re recommending these for kids, we won’t be adding information on that in this post. You can use this recipe as a base with your own information on additives.
If your gelatin didn’t bloom fully or chilling wasn’t long enough, they can be sticky. Make sure the mixture sets completely before shaping, and sugar-coat your cutter to help with sticking.
