Low Carb Garlic Butter Mushrooms

Garlic butter mushrooms are a delectable and easy-to-make side dish that adds a burst of flavor to any meal. The combination of earthy mushrooms, rich butter, and aromatic garlic creates a savory and irresistible dish. The key to the best garlic butter mushrooms lies in the quality of ingredients. Fresh mushrooms, preferably cremini or button, are ideal as they absorb flavors well and have a meaty texture. They are sautéed in a mixture of melted butter and minced garlic, which infuses the mushrooms with a delightful garlicky flavor. A pinch of salt and a dash of freshly ground black pepper enhance the taste, bringing out the natural umami of the mushrooms.

What makes garlic butter mushrooms truly stand out is their versatility. They can be served as a side dish with steaks, chicken, or fish, adding a gourmet touch to simple meals. For a vegetarian option, they can be tossed with pasta, risotto, or even spread on toast for a delicious appetizer. The cooking process is key; mushrooms should be cooked on medium-high heat until they’re golden brown, which brings out a slightly crispy texture on the outside while remaining juicy on the inside. Some variations of the recipe also include herbs like thyme or parsley, a squeeze of lemon juice for a hint of acidity, or a splash of white wine for added depth of flavor. This dish not only tantalizes the taste buds but also offers a great way to enjoy the health benefits of mushrooms, which are known for their nutritional value.

How to Make Garlic Butter Mushrooms

To make this recipe, we will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp Garlic Herb Butter: Garlic herb butter is the star ingredient in this recipe. It brings rich, savory, and garlicky flavor to the dish, enhancing the overall taste and providing a luscious and creamy texture to the mushrooms.
  • 1 tbsp Olive, Canola, or Other Oil: The oil is used for cooking and sautéing the mushrooms. It helps prevent sticking and ensures even cooking. The choice of oil can add its own subtle flavor to the dish.
  • 1 1/2 lbs Gourmet Mushrooms: Gourmet mushrooms, such as cremini, shiitake, or oyster mushrooms, are the main ingredient. They bring a meaty, umami-rich, and earthy flavor to the dish. The variety of mushrooms used can add complexity to the overall taste.
  • 5 Cloves Garlic, Diced: Garlic is a key aromatic ingredient that infuses the mushrooms with a strong and aromatic garlic flavor. It complements the earthiness of the mushrooms and elevates the dish’s taste.
  • 1/4 Cup Dry White Wine: Dry white wine adds depth and complexity to the sauce, providing a slightly acidic and fruity note. It also deglazes the pan and helps create a flavorful sauce.
  • 1/4 tsp Sea Salt, or to Taste: Sea salt enhances the overall flavor of the dish, bringing out the natural flavors of the mushrooms and other ingredients. Adjust the amount to your taste.
  • 1/8 tsp Black Pepper, Fresh Cracked: Freshly cracked black pepper adds a mild spiciness and pungent aroma to the dish. It complements the garlic and enhances the overall taste.

After gathering your ingredients, we will use the following process:

  • Brown mushrooms. Heat a heavy pan or cast iron skillet. Add oil and 1/2 butter. When almost smoking, add mushrooms. Stir and let mushrooms brown slightly.
  • Add garlic and wine. Add remaining 1/2 butter and garlic. Stir quickly to heat garlic, but be careful not to let it burn. Add white wine (caution- it will release a LOT of steam when it hits the pan).
  • Sautée. Let wine cook down. When liquid is fully absorbed, taste.
  • Season to taste. Add salt to taste (don’t add before, the butter may make your mushrooms saltier than you realize when cooked down). Add pepper.
  • Enjoy! Serve warm!

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Mushrooms

  • Let mushrooms crisp.
    • The key to perfect steakhouse style mushroom side dishes is their texture – slightly crispy seared on the outside, without being too crunchy or dry.
    • To get this, mushrooms really need to brown on each side before adding in too much liquid to the pan or stirring too much. Let your mushrooms get lovely golden brown!
    • Use high heat to sear your mushrooms – you do NOT want to slowly cook them, or they will get soggy and limp.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan.
    • Overcrowding a pan lowers the heat – and boils mushrooms. Boiled mushrooms are not great – we’re going for a crispy seared flavor for these amazing mushrooms!
  • Wait to add the wine.
    • Again, browning your mushrooms is vital to this recipe – so adding liquid is only something you will do after mushrooms have been sufficiently browned.
  • Flambe for best results.
    • For the most amazing flavor ever, light your mushrooms on fire right after pouring the wine in so it flambes – this will add a delicious caramelized flavor that will dazzle guests!
  • Add extra butter for sauce at the end.
    • If you want to make a delicious garlic butter mushroom pasta sauce with these mushrooms, simply add a little wine and butter at the end to make a sauce. Don’t add these until your mushrooms have come together, again, so you don’t make them soggy!
