Oven Roasted Beef Ribs

It’s no surprise I love ribs. From smoked pork ribs and sticky Asian style ribs – I just can’t get enough. They are easy to prep and serve, bursting with flavor, and seriously so simple to make.

Beef ribs are right up there for out of this world flavor – they are succulent and rich, and are really simple to make – even right from your oven! While we love the smoky flavor from a BBQ, you can get amazing, tender, fall-off-the-bone flavor from roasting ribs in your oven, too!

Slowly roasting in a BBQ sauce to form a sticky, crunchy bark makes these ribs stand out for their incredible flavor – and easy method.

We will be making these for the big game – I hope you love them as much as we do!

How to Bake Beef Ribs

To make this recipe, we will need the following ingredients:

  • Rack of Beef Ribs: The star of the dish, beef ribs provide rich, meaty flavor and tenderness. Slow roasting them allows the meat to become incredibly tender and flavorful.
  • Avocado Oil: Avocado oil is used to coat the beef ribs before seasoning. It helps seal in moisture, promoting a juicy and succulent final result.
  • Cumin: Cumin adds a warm and earthy flavor with a hint of nuttiness to the ribs. It complements the beef’s richness.
  • Chili Powder: Chili powder brings a mild, smoky heat to the dish, enhancing the overall flavor profile of the beef ribs.
  • Cayenne: Cayenne pepper provides a spicy kick to the seasoning blend. Its heat level can be adjusted to your preference.
  • Garlic Powder: Garlic powder infuses the meat with savory and aromatic notes of garlic, elevating the overall taste of the ribs.
  • Fresh Cracked Black Pepper: Freshly cracked black pepper adds a robust and spicy element to the seasoning, enhancing the beef’s flavor.
  • Parsley: Parsley is often used as a garnish to add a touch of freshness and color to the dish. It provides a mild herbaceous flavor.
  • BBQ Sauce: BBQ sauce is typically served as a condiment or glaze for the beef ribs. It contributes a sweet, smoky, and tangy flavor that pairs wonderfully with the richness of the meat.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, we will use the following process:

  • Prep. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Start by preparing the beef ribs. If there’s excess fat, trim it down to your preference. In a small bowl, mix together the cumin, chili powder, cayenne, garlic powder, and fresh cracked black pepper. Brush the rack of beef ribs with avocado oil to help seal in moisture during cooking.
  • Rub ribs. Rub the spice mixture evenly over the ribs, ensuring they are well coated. Place the seasoned beef ribs on a baking sheet or roasting pan, bone side down.
  • Roast. Cover the ribs with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. This slow-roasting method will make the ribs tender and flavorful.
  • Brush with sauce. After the initial slow roast, remove the foil and brush the ribs generously with your favorite BBQ sauce. You can use a basting brush for even coverage. Return the uncovered ribs to the oven and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the ribs develop a beautiful caramelized glaze and reach your desired level of tenderness.
  • Enjoy! Once done, remove the beef ribs from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes.
  • To serve, garnish with chopped parsley for a burst of freshness.
  • Slice the ribs between the bones and serve with extra BBQ sauce on the side for dipping or drizzling.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Baked Beef Ribs

Select the Right Ribs: Choose meaty beef ribs, such as beef short ribs or beef back ribs. Look for well-marbled ribs with good meat coverage.

Marinate or Season in Advance: For added flavor, marinate the beef ribs or season them with your preferred rub or marinade. Allow them to marinate in the refrigerator for at least a few hours or overnight to enhance the flavor.

Preheat the Oven: Ensure your oven is fully preheated to the desired cooking temperature before placing the ribs inside. This ensures even cooking and a better sear if you’re searing them first.

Searing: While optional, searing the ribs in a hot skillet or on a grill before baking can help develop a flavorful crust and seal in juices. Sear them for a few minutes on each side until nicely browned.

Use a Roasting Pan or Oven-Safe Dish: Place the ribs in a roasting pan or oven-safe dish with high sides. This helps contain any drippings and prevents a mess in your oven.

Wrap in Foil: You can wrap the ribs in aluminum foil to help lock in moisture during the initial cooking phase. This creates a kind of steam environment that keeps the meat tender.

Low and Slow: Bake the ribs at a low temperature (around 275-300°F or 135-150°C) for an extended period, usually 2-3 hours or more. This slow cooking helps break down the tough connective tissues in the meat, resulting in tender ribs.

Basting: Periodically baste the ribs with their juices or a flavorful liquid like barbecue sauce to keep them moist and add extra flavor.

Check for Doneness: The ribs are done when the meat easily pulls away from the bone. Use a fork to test for tenderness. If you want them extra tender, you can cook them longer.

Rest Before Serving: Allow the ribs to rest for a few minutes after removing them from the oven. This helps redistribute the juices and keeps them moist.

Serve with Sauce: If desired, serve the beef ribs with your favorite barbecue sauce or glaze. You can also reduce the cooking juices into a flavorful sauce.

Garnish: Consider garnishing your beef ribs with fresh herbs, sliced scallions, or other complementary toppings for added freshness and visual appeal.
