Fresh Bright Blueberry Coffee Syrup

Blueberries have a wonderful sweet, tart, and fruity flavor which makes them perfect for a simple syrup to enhance your daily coffee. This recipe is so easy, you simply simmer the fresh blueberries in water and honey then strain the mixture and use it within two weeks.

This blueberry syrup is very versatile and adds a natural burst of flavor to pancakes, breakfasts, and dessert in addition to coffee. When my family go and u-pick blueberries I make a big batch of this and freeze it in smaller quantities to use throughout the year. Homemade blueberry syrup also makes a great gift!

How to Make Your Own Blueberry Coffee Syrup

First assemble the following ingredients:

  • Blueberries (2 cups) – Fresh or frozen blueberries provide the rich, fruity base for the syrup, offering natural sweetness and a vibrant color.
  • Water (1 cup) – Water acts as a neutral liquid to help dissolve and blend the blueberries and honey, creating a smooth syrup consistency.
  • Honey (1-2 tbsp) – Honey adds a natural sweetness with floral notes, balancing the tartness of the blueberries while giving the syrup a silky texture.

Use this Method

Boil. In a pot add all the ingredients. Bring to a boil then reduce and simmer for 10 minutes.

Strain. Place a mesh strainer over a large measuring container and pour the blueberry mixture into the mesh, mashing the blueberries.

Keep and Use. Place syrup in a jar and keep in the fridge till ready to use.

Tips and Tricks for Making Blueberry Syrup

Use fresh or frozen blueberries: Both work well, but fresh blueberries give a slightly brighter flavor, while frozen ones are convenient year-round.

Mash the blueberries: As they cook, mash the berries with a spoon to release more juice and flavor for a richer syrup.

Simmer on low heat: Gently simmer the mixture to avoid overcooking and preserve the natural blueberry flavor and color.

Strain for smoothness: Use a fine mesh strainer to remove the blueberry skins for a smoother syrup, or leave them in for texture if you prefer.

Add a pinch of salt: A small amount of salt can enhance the natural sweetness and balance the flavors of the syrup.

Incorporate lemon juice: A splash of lemon juice can brighten the flavor and balance the sweetness, while also helping to preserve the syrup longer.

Stir frequently: To prevent the syrup from sticking or burning, stir regularly while it simmers.

Adjust sweetness: Taste the syrup while cooking and add more honey or sugar if you prefer a sweeter result.

Cool before storing: Let the syrup cool completely before transferring it to a jar or bottle to store in the fridge.

Use a thickening agent (optional): If you prefer a thicker consistency, mix a small amount of cornstarch with water and add it to the simmering syrup.
