This blueberry syrup is very versatile and adds a natural burst of flavor to pancakes, breakfasts, and dessert in addition to coffee. Tips and Tricks for Making Blueberry Syrup
Use fresh or frozen blueberries: Both work well, but fresh blueberries give a slightly brighter flavor, while frozen ones are convenient year-round.
Mash the blueberries: As they cook, mash the berries with a spoon to release more juice and flavor for a richer syrup.
Simmer on low heat: Gently simmer the mixture to avoid overcooking and preserve the natural blueberry flavor and color.
Strain for smoothness: Use a fine mesh strainer to remove the blueberry skins for a smoother syrup, or leave them in for texture if you prefer.
Add a pinch of salt: A small amount of salt can enhance the natural sweetness and balance the flavors of the syrup.
Incorporate lemon juice: A splash of lemon juice can brighten the flavor and balance the sweetness, while also helping to preserve the syrup longer.
Stir frequently: To prevent the syrup from sticking or burning, stir regularly while it simmers.
Adjust sweetness: Taste the syrup while cooking and add more honey or sugar if you prefer a sweeter result.
Cool before storing: Let the syrup cool completely before transferring it to a jar or bottle to store in the fridge.
Use a thickening agent (optional): If you prefer a thicker consistency, mix a small amount of cornstarch with water and add it to the simmering syrup.
