Cranberry Herb Tree Cheese Wedges

You can use any medium soft cheese for these wedges, but I prefer to get the laughing cow cheese wedges that are already individual wrapped triangles. It saves you a step and they are just the perfect consistency for sticking with the pretzel and picking up the toppings.

I like to decorate/season my Christmas tree cheese wedges with cranberries and herbs, but you can do other seasonings. Sometimes I do some like this and some with candied pecans or even edible flowers for a fancy presentation. You can eat these cheese trees straight or you can serve them alongside crackers, apple slices, or more pretzels.

How to Make Christmas Tree Cheese Sticks

First assemble the following ingredients:

  • Cheese Wedges (8 Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges) – Soft and creamy cheese wedges serve as the base for the Christmas tree shape.
  • Mini pretzel sticks – These crunchy sticks act as the tree trunks, giving each cheese tree a stable handle.
  • Herbs (1/3 cup) – Finely chopped herbs add a vibrant green color and a fresh, aromatic “tree” appearance.
  • Red pepper (1 tsp) – A dash of crushed red pepper adds a subtle spice and pops of red for a festive flair.
  • Sea Salt (1/2 tsp) – A sprinkle of salt brings out the flavor of the cheese and the toppings.
  • Cranberries (1/3 cup) – Sweet and tangy chopped cranberries resemble ornaments, adding color and texture to the cheese trees.

Use this Method

Prep Seasonings. Fill a shallow bowl or plate with seasonings and herbs.

Press. Press a cheese wedge down into the herbs to coat one side. Flip over and insert one half of a pretzel stick. Serve immediately.

Tips and Tricks to Easy Tree Shaped Christmas Cheese Wedges

Choose the Right Cheese. Use firm or semi-firm cheeses like cheddar, gouda, or Colby Jack for easy cutting and shaping. For a creamier texture, mix cream cheese with a firmer cheese to balance firmness with spreadability.

Cut the Cheese Strategically. Use a sharp knife to cut the cheese into uniform wedge shapes resembling triangular “trees.” Chill the cheese beforehand to ensure clean cuts and prevent crumbling.

Add a Flavorful Coating. Roll the wedges in crushed nuts, smoked paprika, or finely diced sundried tomatoes to add texture and flavor.

Create Variety. Mix and match cheeses and toppings to cater to different tastes (e.g., spicy cheese with chili flakes, or a smoky flavor with bacon bits).

Use a Piping Bag for Details. Fill a piping bag with herbed cream cheese or ricotta to create “garlands” or patterns on the tree.

Work in Small Batches. Prepare a few wedges at a time and keep the remaining cheese refrigerated to prevent softening while you decorate.

Serve with Complementary Sides. Pair with crackers, crostini, or vegetable sticks for easy eating. Include a variety of dips (e.g., honey mustard, balsamic glaze) to enhance flavors.

Display Creatively. Arrange the cheese wedges in the shape of a large Christmas tree on a serving board. Add rosemary sprigs, cranberries, and edible flowers to enhance the festive presentation.

Keep It Fresh. Prepare the cheese wedges close to serving time to maintain freshness. Cover the platter with plastic wrap and store in the fridge if prepping in advance.

Experiment with Colors. Use colored cheese like green pesto-flavored cheese or add a thin layer of food-safe green gel for vibrant “trees.”

FAQs

What type of cheese works best for Christmas tree wedges?

Firm or semi-firm cheeses like cheddar, gouda, Monterey Jack, or Colby are ideal because they are easy to cut and hold their shape well. You can also use cream cheese mixed with firmer cheese for a softer texture.

How do I shape the cheese into a Christmas tree?

Slice the cheese block into triangles to create the tree shape. Start by cutting the block into even rectangular slices, then trim them diagonally into triangles.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the wedges a day in advance. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator, separated with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

How do I keep the decorations from falling off?

For small toppings like herbs or seeds, gently press them into the surface of the cheese wedge. If you’re adding larger decorations like pomegranate seeds, use a thin layer of cream cheese or a similar adhesive spread to help them stick.

What if my cheese crumbles while cutting?

Ensure the cheese is cold but not frozen before cutting. Use a sharp knife and clean it between cuts to maintain smooth edges. Avoid overly aged or crumbly cheeses.

What are some flavor variations I can try?

Spicy: Sprinkle with crushed red pepper or chili powder.
Sweet: Add honey drizzle, crushed nuts, or dried cranberries.
Smoky: Use smoked cheeses and sprinkle with paprika.
Herbed: Mix cream cheese with garlic and herbs for a coating.

Can I make these vegan?

Yes! Use plant-based cheeses that are firm enough to cut into wedges, or create a softer version using a homemade cashew or almond-based cheese spread and shaping it into triangles.

Festive treats: triangular white chocolate pieces with cranberries and herbs, arranged like Christmas tree cheese wedges on pretzel sticks, resembling tiny Christmas trees, all elegantly placed on a decorated plate.
