Fall Inspired Pumpkin Pie Martini
I love a good cocktail any time of the year. In the summer I love the sweet and tart refreshing fruity flavors and, in the fall, and winter I love the earthy spicy flavors of hot and cold ciders and cocktails. This pumpkin pie martini recipe was inspired by my husband’s favorite pie – you guessed it, creamy dreamy pumpkin with a dollop of whipped cream on top.
I use dark rum and pumpkin spice vodka in this recipe for the closest flavor profile to a slice of pumpkin pie that you can get. If you don’t have pumpkin spice vodka its ok, you can substitute regular vodka or vanilla vodka. If you use regular vodka just add a little bit more vanilla extract to get a stronger flavor. I sweeten this cocktail with maple syrup since it goes so well with pumpkin but if you don’t have any on hand you can use simple syrup or even honey. You dont have to massively expand your liquor cabinet to make this seasonal pumpkin pie martini but be sure to balance the flavors when making substitutions. Hope you enjoy this cocktail at your Thanksgiving meal and other fall gathers like we do!
How to make a Pumpkin Pie Martini
First assemble the following ingredients:
- Ice Cubes (3) – Ice cubes chill and dilute the pumpkin pie martini, ensuring a smooth and refreshing sip.
- Pumpkin Spice Vodka (2 ounces) – This flavored vodka infuses the martini with warm pumpkin spice notes, though regular or vanilla vodka can be used for a subtler twist. You can also use regular or vanilla vodka.
- Dark Rum (1 ounces) – Dark rum adds depth and a rich molasses flavor, complementing the sweetness of the pumpkin and spices.
- Pumpkin Puree (2 tbsp) – Real pumpkin puree gives the martini an authentic pumpkin flavor and creamy texture.
- Maple Syrup (1 ounces) – Adds a rich, sweet, and earthy flavor that enhances the autumnal warmth of the drink.
- Pure Vanilla Extract (¼ tsp) – Enhances the overall warmth and sweetness, adding a subtle vanilla undertone.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice (Pinch) – A mix of warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, it gives the martini its signature pumpkin pie flavor.
- Half and Half (½ ounces) – Adds a creamy texture and richness, balancing the flavors with a smooth finish.
For the Rim
- Maple Syrup – Maple syrup helps the glass to hold the wafer crumble on it.
- Vanilla Wafers (1) – Crushed vanilla wafers provide a sweet, crumbly garnish that mimics the texture of pie crust.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice (½ tsp) – A final touch of spice for an extra burst of pumpkin pie flavor in the drink.
- Granulated Sugar (1 tbsp) – Adds sweetness to balance out the other flavors in the drink, and can also be used for rimming the glass.
- Whipped Cream, Pumpkin Pie Spice, Cinnamon Stick – these optional garnishes add color and a lovely appearance to your martini.
Use this Method
Prepare the Martini Glass Rim. Crush vanilla wafers in a resealable bag, or food processor, until it resembles sand. Stir in the pumpkin spice and sugar. Dip the rim of a martini glass into maple syrup, then roll the rim in the wafer mix. Set the glass aside.
My Pro Tip
Tip for Rimming Glass
I dip a thick napkin into the maple syrup and use the napkin to neatly apply the syrup to the rim of the glass.
Prepare the Martini. In a cocktail shaker, combine the ice with the vodka, rum, pumpkin, maple syrup and vanilla, along with the pumpkin spice if using. Shake vigorously until shaker chilled to the touch. Add in the cream and swirl or stir to combine.
Serve. Strain and pour cocktail into the prepared martini glass. Garnish with cinnamon stick, dollop with whipped cream and sprinkle with pumpkin spice and/or nutmeg. Enjoy!
Tips and Tricks to Make Pumpkin Martini
Choose the Right Vodka. Use vanilla or whipped cream-flavored vodka to enhance the pie-like taste. Regular vodka works too, but flavored varieties can make the drink smoother and more dessert-like.
Add Pumpkin Puree. Mix in a small spoonful of pumpkin puree for authentic pumpkin flavor and creamy texture. Make sure to blend or shake well so it doesn’t clump.
Use Pumpkin Spice Liqueur. Add a pumpkin spice liqueur, such as Pumpkin Spice Baileys or a similar cream-based liqueur, for an extra layer of flavor.
Rim the Glass. For a festive touch, rim the glass with a mixture of crushed graham crackers and cinnamon sugar. Dip the glass rim in maple syrup or honey first so the crumbs stick.
Use Half-and-Half or Heavy Cream. For a creamy texture, use half-and-half or heavy cream. If you want a lighter option, you can substitute with almond milk or coconut milk, but the creaminess may be reduced.
Don’t Forget the Spices. Add a dash of pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, or nutmeg into the shaker for an aromatic punch of flavor.
Shake with Ice for Smoothness. Always shake the ingredients with ice to chill the martini and create a smooth, well-mixed drink. This helps to blend the pumpkin puree and spices evenly.
Garnish Creatively. Top your martini with whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or even a small cinnamon stick for extra flair. A mini gingerbread cookie on the side also adds a fun, seasonal touch.
Balance the Flavors. If the drink is too strong, adjust the balance by adding more cream or liqueur. If it’s too sweet, a splash of plain vodka or a hint of fresh lemon juice can cut through the sweetness.
Serve Immediately. Pumpkin pie martinis are best served fresh and cold. Make sure to shake and pour them right before serving for the best flavor and consistency.
FAQs
Yes! Regular vodka works fine, but using flavored vodka like vanilla or whipped cream can enhance the dessert-like quality of the drink and add more depth of flavor.
Shake the drink vigorously with ice to fully incorporate the pumpkin puree into the liquid. If you want a super smooth texture, you can even blend the ingredients together before shaking.
Yes! Almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk can be used as a substitute for heavy cream or half-and-half, but keep in mind that these will make the drink lighter and less creamy.
It’s best to prepare them fresh, but you can premix the ingredients (excluding ice) and store in the fridge for a few hours. When ready to serve, shake with ice to chill and pour.
If the drink is too sweet, you can add more vodka or a splash of fresh lemon juice to balance the sweetness and bring some brightness to the flavors.
You can use Irish cream, vanilla liqueur, or a combination of pumpkin pie spice and a cream-based liqueur like Baileys as a substitute if you don’t have pumpkin spice liqueur.
A martini glass is traditional, but you can also serve it in a coupe glass or even a small, festive tumbler for a cozier presentation.
