Spicy Smoked Trail Mix

My husband LOVES his smoker, he loves me and the kids as well of course but the smoker is his third love. I am always trying to figure out things for him to smoke alongside our favorite savory keto friendly meats and this smoked trail mix has become a family favorite!

Trail mix can come in all different forms. We love the classic nuts, dried fruits, and chocolate but dried fruits don’t smoke very well. Chocolate can be added at the end of the smoking process but can get messy if we accidentally leave the trail mix in the car – don’t ask why I know. Using a variety of crackers and pretzels lets me really coat the mixture with the Ranch spice mix and get that smoky, crunchy, savory bite every time!

How to Make Smoked Trail Mix

First assemble the following ingredients:

  • Butter (2 Tablespoons) – Melted butter adds a rich, creamy flavor to the smoked trail mix, helping the seasonings stick to each ingredient.
  • Vegetable Oil (5 Tablespoons) – Vegetable oil provides a light coating that enhances crispiness during smoking and ensures even distribution of the flavors.
  • Ranch seasoning powder (3 tbsp) – Ranch seasoning brings a tangy, herby flavor that complements the smokiness and adds a burst of savory taste.
  • Jalapeno pretzels (3 Cups) – Jalapeño pretzels give the trail mix a spicy, crunchy bite that pairs well with the smoky undertones.
  • Seasoned pretzel sticks (3 Cups) – Seasoned pretzel sticks add extra crunch and salty, spiced flavor, making the trail mix more addictive.
  • Cheezit Crackers (3 Cups) – Cheez-It crackers contribute a cheesy, savory element that balances the smokiness with a satisfying crunch.
  • Mini club crackers (3 Cups) – Mini club crackers bring a buttery, light texture to the mix, offering a mellow contrast to bolder flavors.
  • Salted cashews (1 Cup) – Salted cashews add a rich, nutty flavor with a creamy crunch, elevating the texture and providing a perfect balance of salty and smoky.

Once you’ve gathered you ingredients, we will use this method:

  1. Prep. Heat the smoker to 225 degrees F. If you have a super smoke option and really want it smoky you can use that, but increase the time by 30 minutes.
  2. Melt and Mix. In a glass measuring cup, melt the butter in 15 second intervals in the microwave until melted. Stir in the oil and seasonings
  3. Toss and Set Out. Line a large jelly roll or cookie sheet with heavy duty foil. In a very large bowl, add the cereal, crackers, pretzels, peanuts and bagel chips. Pour the dressing all over and toss well to combine. Spread everything out on the cookie sheet (you can use two if you prefer, but make sure you stir often so that nothing will burn.)
  4. Smoke It. Place everything into the smoker and allow to cook for 2 hours, stirring every 15-30 minutes.
  5. Enjoy and Storage. Store in an airtight container once cooled for up to 1 week.

Tips and Tricks for Spicy Smokey Snack Mix

Mix in Proteins: Consider adding smoked jerky bites or crispy chickpeas for extra protein and variety in texture.

Smoke Low and Slow: Set your smoker or grill to a low temperature (around 180–200°F) to infuse a subtle, smoky flavor without burning the ingredients.

Use Wood Wisely: Opt for mild smoking woods like applewood, cherry, or pecan, which complement the natural sweetness of nuts and dried fruits without overpowering them.

Toss for Even Smoke: Stir or shake the mix occasionally during the smoking process to ensure all ingredients are evenly exposed to the smoke.

Cool Properly: Let the trail mix cool completely before storing it to preserve its crunch and avoid condensation.

Add Chocolate Later: If you want to add chocolate chips or chunks, wait until the mix has cooled down completely, so the chocolate doesn’t melt.

Store Airtight: Keep your smoked trail mix in an airtight container to maintain freshness and crunch for up to a week.

Experiment with Flavors: Try adding a pinch of cayenne, cinnamon, or honey for unique flavor combinations that complement the smokiness.

FAQs

Can I use pre-roasted nuts for smoked trail mix?

It’s better to use raw nuts, as pre-roasted nuts can overcook and become too dry during the smoking process. Raw nuts absorb the smoky flavor better and roast evenly in the smoker.

What’s the best type of wood to use for smoking trail mix?

Mild woods like applewood, cherry, or pecan are ideal for smoking trail mix because they add a subtle smokiness without overpowering the delicate flavors of the nuts.

Do I need to soak the nuts before smoking?

No, soaking the nuts is not necessary. Instead, lightly coat them with oil and seasonings before smoking to enhance their flavor and help the seasonings stick.

Can I add chocolate to smoked trail mix?

Yes, but wait until the trail mix has completely cooled down after smoking. This prevents the chocolate from melting and clumping together in the mix.

How do I store smoked trail mix?

Store smoked trail mix in an airtight container at room temperature. It will stay fresh for up to a week, or longer if refrigerated.

Can I make smoked trail mix without a smoker?

Yes, you can achieve a smoky flavor by using smoked paprika or liquid smoke in your seasoning mix and baking the trail mix in the oven at a low temperature.

Can I make a spicy version of smoked trail mix?

Absolutely! Add cayenne pepper, chili powder, or even crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning mix before smoking to give your trail mix a spicy kick.
