Since starting a low carb (keto-ish) diet, my husband has lost over 35 pounds and I have lost a little over 20 (he’s been able to stick to it much better than I have, as my job has had me traveling all over the world and eating decidedly non-low-carb items for the last three months…), and it was incredibly simple.
We’ve stuck to eating under 25 carbs (net – subtract fiber from carbs) a day, meaning mostly fats (nuts, avocado, fresh full-fat cheeses), meats, and above-ground vegetables – with light fruits and higher sugar vegetables (carrots, onions, radishes) mixed in. We’ve been trying to completely avoid grains (wheat, oats, quinoa), starches (corn, potatoes, beans), and anything processed and full of sugar.
We’re basically trying to eat as little sugar (processed or natural) as possible – and it has seriously paid off!
Not only have we lost some weight, but we both feel better and have way more energy when on a very low carb and low sugar keto diet.
As a food blogger, it’s very important to me to have tons of bright color and fresh flavors in what I eat – so we’ve developed a ton of recipes that are low sugar and low carb but still delicious and crave-worthy!

Recipes that appear with an asterisk * are not appropriate for super low carb (non-fruit) diets where you are trying to achieve ketosis, as they contain sugar from fruit. If you’re in a maintenance phase of your diet, or are restricting only added sugars and eating fruit, they are a wonderful addition to a low carb eating plan.
If you are sticking to a paleo diet and avoiding cheese, many of these recipes will need modification. All recipes with cheese are intended to be made with full-fat, all natural cheese – NOT processed cheese. Even pre-shredded cheese often contains trace amounts of gluten and preservatives, so opt for fresh natural cheeses.
