Friday Fitness Finds

someecards.com - Unfortunately, my dreams about being skinny keep being interruped by the sound of my own chewing.

This Friday Finds is all about goals- working off some of this baby (well, mostly pre-baby) weight! I’ve compiled some at-home workouts I found around the web that seem do-able in between laundry and diapers. These aren’t long routines- rather 20 minute circuits and toning moves I can sneak in whenever I have a free moment.

First, though come see why I am trying to get motivated- well, you know, other than the obvious post-baby motivation (you can really see the difference in my face):

After college, I lost the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior 15s, started running more, and along with a very busy work/social schedule, I stayed fairly thin for my frame.

Then, a few years into dating my husband, some recurring health issues started bothering me a lot more (I have PCOS and endometriosis), and I had to be on and off of hormone therapy for about a year before our wedding. Just what any bride wants- to gain 60 pounds before the big day! Most usually lose that- but what can I say- I guess I am a trailblazer.

Currently, I have lost the baby weight from baby B, but it’s time to start tackling the pre-wedding hormone disaster. It won’t be as easy, since you know, I’m no longer in my 20′s- but I am always chasing around/lifting/nursing kids, which has helped me lose weight without any dieting so far.
My diet isn’t great (I intend to go back on the paleo diet sometime soon), but when I was my skinniest I never really paid attention to what I was eating- I just worked out a lot. Obviously, being older means I can’t have a bag of chili cheese fritos for breakfast, a goodtimes burger and fries for lunch, and some dive bar chili rellenos alongside a bunch of cheap beer for dinner- but I am not going to lie to you and tell you I’m going to try to eliminate fat, carbs or bacon from my routine. I’m trying to eat less, but I also know there are days I might eat a piece of chocolate cake. Or the whole cake, whatever.
So here’s the plan- along with more frequent walks with the babies, I’ve compiled a list of easy-to-do at home toning moves I can sneak into my day whenever I can. While these don’t look easy, they are do-able, and something I know I can stick to by breaking it up into several segments throughout the day, in between diapers, naps and laundry.
Here we go:

>Quick and Easy Dinner- Shrimp and Grits (with bacon)

>

Full disclosure: this recipe is not a weight watchers compatible recipe. Sure, shrimp is healthy, and grits aren’t bad either, but adding bacon and a ton of cheese doesn’t help the waistline!

Also, as someone who was raised in Colorado and southern California (whose grandparents are yankees and dakotans), I do not pretend to be an expert on grits so please don’t compare mine to your grandma’s old southern recipe :) !

You’ll need:

-Quick Grits or organic grits, cooked according to the package directions
-1/2 pound shredded sharp cheddar cheese (more or less to taste)
-dash of milk or cream
-1/2 pound shrimp
-3 slices bacon, cooked slowly until crispy, then crumbled (optional)
-Garlic or garlic powder, and paprika, depending on your preference or what you have on hand

If you have some leftover bacon, this is a one-pot meal, which is perfect for me on a hectic weekday! Total cooking and prep time is under 15 minutes.

Start by cooking grits to the packages directions. The quick grits I used said to place in boiling water, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 5 minutes. After the grits started to thicken up, I added the cheese, crumbled bacon, garlic (although I think garlic powder works best for such a quick recipe in retrospect) and about a tablespoon and a half of smoked spanish paprika (we love paprika here- it can be easily lost in a rich dish like this so I added quite a bit. It helps balance the cheese’s flavor). My grits got a little too thick (I like them pretty creamy) so I added a bit of milk to thin them out.

When the grits were almost done, I tossed in the uncooked shrimp. I let them cook for two minutes on the heat, and then took the pan off the heat to cool a bit. The shrimp continue to cook in the piping hot grits- so to avoid overcooked shrimp, either sautee them in the bacon grease (yum) and add them to the top of the grits at the end, or add them into your grits almost before serving. Shrimp should be opaque and pink, not grey, but should not cook verylong after the whole body appears pink, or it will be rubbery and sometimes will taste fishy.

Plate and enjoy!

Shadowbox Turned Display Case

I recently recieved a TON of beautiful jewelry to play with (more on that soon…) and was in desperate need of a way to store and display all of my lovely new creations. I also had a broken shadowbox I didn’t want to toss away.

Add a little chickenwire and some pins… and I have an awesome new jewelry/craft display case!

(and because I am totally cheesy, I am going around calling this my real life jewelry pin board… tee hee)

{photography} Easy Tips For Better Food Photography!

Food photography is one of the hardest things to master- I constantly feel like I doing an “I’m not worthy” chant when I look at fabulous food blogs- but there are a few easy tips I have found lately that I can’t wait to share with you! For this post I used my DSLR camera (I shoot with a Canon t2i, and am using a 50mm lens at 2.0 aperture on a/v mode for this shoot).

If you don’t have a DSLR, you can still get great macro effects with your point-and-shoot camera- but you need to turn on it’s macro mode. On a canon powershot, you will see a small picture of a tulip on one of the settings. This will switch to macro.

IMG_2387

First, start off with lighting. You want as much natural light as possible coming in through your windows- which can be tricky in kitchens. Time the shot if you need to so that you can get the most sun shining in! For my west facing kitchen, this just so happens to correspond with dinnertime.

Next, you will want to set up a story for your shots. If you are familiar with your recipe, you will have a little more flexibility in taking pictures. If you are unsure of a recipe, you’ll likely forget to take pictures while assembling your dish.
IMG_2344

When taking the “ingredients/mixture” picture, be careful of your mixing bowl. I actually have a beautiful set of bright red mixing bowls that I primarily use for baking- but they photograph TERRIBLY. They make everything have a weird red hue, and it looks off. Use a stainless steel bowl if you have one. If you don’t, go buy one. You can get one for under $5 at IKEA. Get in close, and at an angle that isn’t directly above, if possible.
IMG_2348
Set up some interesting shots by using your ingredients as props. These sprinkles are so fun, and showing off how you store them (like in this cute mini-mason) adds a whole other story to your post, without adding extra clutter. Keep it simple and relevant. This also helps convey size- the cookies are roughly the same diameter as the mason.

IMG_2370
Also, make sure your picture doesn’t have clutter in it! This picture is totally distracting, and I don’t want to pretend my kitchen is ever clean enough for a shot that isn’t pulled in tight.

IMG_2350

Now to one of my biggest pet peeves, and my nemesis- uneven lighting. Whether you are taking a picture of a person, a craft, or food- you need to watch your lighting. See how this cookie is unevenly lit and the shadows look really harsh? It’s totally distracting and can lead to fake looking photos. Bring your subject into full light, or preferably, full shade right next to the light.

By just moving my baking sheet to another counter I got this light:

IMG_2359

To get this bokeh (essentially the blurry background), I simply took this picture as close as my lens tolerated at a 2.0 aperture. Smaller numbers actually mean a larger lens opening which brings more light into your lens, and also creates a shallow depth of field (distance you can see in the background).

For a point and shoot camera, adjust your angles and get in really close. It won’t blur the background this much, but you will still get some good blurring.
IMG_2366

This picture is taken straight above the cookie. It is a good picture, but it is pretty darn boring. Straight on angles don’t draw readers in. Sometimes you just can’t get a different angle, and in those cases, go ahead and take something straight on- but otherwise, I’d suggest moving a bit closer, and off to the side a bit, like this:
IMG_23872
Note- I also added more cookies to make the shot more dynamic. One, off to the side was better than just the straight on- but when stacked, the cookies looked so much more inviting and whimsical! Obviously if you are making a roast, you won’t stack it- but you could add a sprig of rosemary, or a fork, to give it height and more angles to work with.
IMG_2400

If you can get a model to eat your food, take a picture! I think it adds a fun, personal touch to your photographs and pulls readers into your blog. Unfortunately, I can’t usually get little man to stand still for more than one second, especially when feeding him sugar!

Here’s one last shot to show why angles are so important- with a slightly different food (my dinner while I was taking shots):

The best tip I can give you is to invest in good editing software. I use Adobe Lightroom, and I am a HUGE fan of Lightroom. It is easy to learn, offers great organization for your photos, and makes your photos look professional. It is a bit pricey, but it is worth every penny. Please “like” Sweet C’s on Facebook and be sure to follow my updates- I’ll let you know anytime it is on sale! (It was recently 1/2 off).

Patio Makeover with the help of Kmart!

I was recently given the opportunity to make over my backyard. Um, yes, please- our backyard is seriously uninspired.

While the grass is having a hard time in life, and we are in serious need of more trees and shrubs, the saddest part of our backyard was our gorgeous patio. We have a huge, beautiful concrete patio that wraps around our backyard (complete with firepit) that I had put in when I bought the house, but it has never really come to life with the boring furniture we had on it.

So, for an early Mother’s Day present, I headed to Kmart to find some new ways to spruce up our space. Read on to see more pics and how I did it!

Redwood Garden Bed

IMG_7010

We have a small backyard- with a lot of needs. Little man and Angus the dog love to play in the grass, we have a large concrete patio and firepit, and when I bought my house, we were given precious little room to transform into a garden. My husband and I debated installing raised garden beds (which I really, really wanted…) but in a neighborhood with a lot of new construction aimed at families, we figured it would be best to keep our lawn in-tact in case we sell our house anytime in the near future.

So we started trying to figure out where to put in a garden. The most logical choice was in between our fence and lawn, in an area covered in river rock. After a while of hauling endless amounts of river rock, we have finally completed our west and north facing wrap around garden, and I can’t wait to share this easy, durable and beautiful solution with you!

Here’s how my wonderful hubby did it: [Read more...]
